Yo,Bo! Komiks in UPLB!

KomiksTrip is UPLB's very own comic book convention presented by the UP BUGKOS and JONASDIEGO.COM in cooperation with the Graphic Literature Guild and the UP Painters' Club happening this coming February 19, 2011, Saturday at the new CAS Annex at the University of the Philippines in Los Banos (UPLB) in Laguna.

I am an ELBIZEN and proud of it. I wouldn't miss this event for the world. Norbs and I are still working on the story of the next Yo,Bo! issue and he is trying new career options (please pray that he gets into an animation studio so he can learn how to use technology to make Yo,Bo! more awesome, k?) so we are very busy. I just got regularized in my new company, so we are really sorry we haven't kept you in touch with what is happening with Bo, Deo and all the crazy people in this whole industry.

Going back to the KomiksTrip 2011 in UPLB

I want to sit near the audience to I can also pay attention to what's going on while we are selling Yo,Bo! and Gutom.

I hope that my friends and co-Elbizens would be there. *Darn why did everyone I know graduate before I went into comics and this happened to UPLB? Huh? Dju know how many untold ghost stories and love stories and funnies that could have come out from my entire college experience? Gazillions!* We might look into that in the future. *teehee*

So, to all my Elbizen friends, please holler and represent on Feb19! Mga Commarts! Mga UPFC! Mga GABAY! Lahat ng mga gumulong, gumugulong at gugulong pa sa Freedom Park, bumili, magbasa at mag-kosplay na!

Kitakits!

U-P-L-B, TU-NAY, PA-LA-BAN,MA-KA-KOMIKS!

Issue #3 HOT OFF THE PRESSES!

Well, technically there was no pressing that happened. But it was quite a ride making this issue. Because of all the procrastinating and boo-boos by yours truly (Simon) the third issue took a little longer than expected. BUT, it's all printed out and it's ready for you, our loyal and awesome readers. ^_^

And honestly, it's the coolest version of Yo,Bo! thus far. So don't forget to complete your issues and grab the third one this November 13!

*fan art makers are welcome to give their Bo to Norby and if we can we would include your fan art in our fan art pages on the issues. We featured three for this one, we'll feature more next time!*

Excited yet Procrastinating

There are a lot of things that are going to come out this Komikon. We didn't quite get the issue#4 out along with issue#3 for this Komikon but after seeing the pages that Norby made for issue#3, I am sensing that the time taken to make them was well worth it.

We also though of something useful that we could give our fans that would make them remember the characters more. I think we might just do it every year. The idea came from Norby and he thought it would be a great idea to promote the events we would frequent next year. Everyone needs to cross out days until something that is important to them. Sure we have our digital calendars and what not, but a regular one would be more visible, and accessible. We want Bo or Missy hanging on your wall 12 months of the year, or at least on your desk. But we'll get back to you on that.

I admit that I have been remiss on my speed in making the pages. And I would have to apologize to you guys for that. I had a lot of extra stuff that I had to deal with. And for some reason, whenever I decide to schedule Bo time, something catastrophic happens to people's lives or love lives. If there is something you must know about Bo, or a future character that would become a part of his world, they are both big on friends. So I hope you understand.

But this thing, which started out as a hobby for me will continue. I guess I would have to keep doing it to make myself come out of the funk that writing puts me. I just hope that life stops distracting me long enough for me to finish it.

I'll see you guys at the Komikon, ayt?

FLIPGEEKS CAUGHT US AT THE METROCON!

Of all the possible shots that could have ever been taken and published, one where my flabs were out had to be the one shown T_T, - Simon

It was a cool experience and we would definitely do it again. Being the Metrocon virgin made Yo,Bo! Komiks team learn a lot and we would like to thank everyone who joined us in our first time. We promise to stock up more issues so that we don't run out of them next time. Although that was a nice surprise for us, it would be cooler to sell more to people who are looking for it.

I promised Norby that we would have more contests for the Komikon. I am bugging Big to try to learn how to make silk screens. And I probably going to be busy this month with Issue #3.

So I hope you guys would watch out for the possible new issues as well as the contest that we would have in store for you.

And remember,

The Pinoy Komiks is worth dying for.

Simon, out.

MetroCon Day 1: Yo,Bo! The REAL Beginning

Yo,Bo! The REAL Beginning
NRSimon (writer)

We started this comics early this year. It was born out of sheer boredom. We wanted to do something that would take us out of our work rut. We liked our jobs at this Korean online academy in Ortigas because it paid well enough and we only had to tutor Koreans in English via the internet. But things were not working out with the management and we smelled impending doom. So we needed something that would make us want to go back to work everyday. Big M and I were from the AM shift so when we moved to the PM shift, we didn't exactly do it because we wanted to...but that's something for my personal blog.

Let's go back to the story. We were teachers, online English teachers. It seems harmless enough but the challenge was that our classes were screen classes. This makes for a million and one funny moments. Big Mark (the M in NMN Creative) is the mastermind behind the comics. He subtly manipulated fate to bring Norby, our resident artist (the first N in NMN Creative) and Ni
ña, the weird writer (the second N in NMNcreative) together to collaborate in making a motion comic. Unfortunately none of us knew how to use Flash which was the easiest one to learn to be able to make a motion comic. Big tried but he needs us to help with colors. Nevertheless, it turns out I was the only one who could use Photoshop although Big is a quick learner. We decided that we would try a paper version for now. It ended up that with all the things happening plus procrastination on all our parts especially mine, the paper version would be the bane of our existence for months to come. The motion comics is something we would need to work on in the distant future...

Nevertheless, we managed to get the gist of the first book figured out. The second book and the third book are already playing around on our heads. With Big moving to Canada soon, we would definitely need to chat with him more often to get his ideas.

Another obstacle was to get our day jobs from interrupting our comics cover mission. ^_^ We managed to get issues out instead of the entire 50 page book we wanted since the story seemed to work better that way. We have issue #1 Yo,Bo! 1: The Beginning and Issue 2 Yo,Bo! 2: Frenimies. We plan to get Issue #3 and #4 by the Komikon in November. I took an AM shift so I can work on Yo, Bo! (among other things) in the afternoons. ^_^

We had released a preview of Yo,Bo! during the free comic book day in COMIC ODYSSEY (Robinson's Galleria) last May. We managed to give out 20 copies (I think) but the Issue#1 that we released during the MetroCon showed a better version of the preview. I am glad that I was a part of this collaboration. I suck at balloons and comics-related lettering before but I learned a lot while doing this whole thing. I realized that when you are passionate about something, you just need a bit of push to get you to put your dreams into action. Issue#1 and #2 are the only real things I helped make that was sold for any amount of money. Sure we earned close to nothing on our first try. (Hobby ito, grabe.) But we ran out of Issue#1 and we didn't expect that to happen! People found out what Bo does for a living for one thing. And that opened a few people's minds. They didn't know that Online English Teachers existed. (One of the things that irked us was that we were called Call Center agents whenever our parents told other people about our jobs. T_T No offense to them but what we do is so different from what they do that it's just plain odd to put us in the same category.)

For my first comics convention, MetroCon 2010 was definitely memorable. I was able to see that the things that indie comics artists have to go through just to get their work out there is tremendous. I also learned that I managed to learn a lot from selling tickets for plays when I was in UPLB. Patience, fast talk and the ability to pay attention to everyone around you at the same time is a skill not everyone can master.

Norby can handle the art part. Big can come up with the cash (joke) and the concepts. I can write, photoshop and advertise. ^_^ I guess we can thank our maker that we have shortcomings that can be filled by the talents of one another.

We would like to thank the organizers of MCC 2010 and the FANS who bought the comics and will buy them. To the contest winners, NGUD JAHB! Please wait for the photos sa FB so you can tag yourselves. ^_^

"The FILIPINO KOMIKS is worth dying for." Funny how that got a lot of people's attention today. Probably because it was Ninoy's death anniversary. ^_^ Mr. President, your dad is awesome. ^_^

Norby Ela's Weather Weather Lang

Please check out the 24-Hour Comic Book Challenge entry that our artist, Norby Ela made: Weather Weather Lang

TEASER CHARACTER: Foreign Online Student

This is one of the many characters that will be in Yo, Bo!

Foreign Online Student

We will reveal his name in the komik. So, watch out!

All for now!

Norby Ela : 24- hour Komiks Gladiator by Niña

Norby Ela : 24- hour Komiks Gladiator
by Niña Simon

Our artist Norby figured it was about time to actually get his mojo tested on the komiks gladiator arena. Having been an ultimate fanboy turned indie komik artist (we blame BigMark for giving him more cojones to get around to making something like Yo, Bo! and believing in his talent) he wants to know if he can actually make a comic in under 24 hours.

Norby Ela: Well, I haven't tried it yet. And I really wanted to enter the last 24-Hour Comic Challenge. But, I was too much of a chicken to join. But, since I've decided to make a komik with my officemates at work, I think it's time to grow some balls and do the challenge.

When he told me about this I was like, "Do I help him with this?" He said he has to do it alone. Whew. I figured that was the challenge there. For the most part I am a procrastinator so that time limit would not be okay for me if I had to help him out. He often needs people to bug and spitball ideas with to come up with story plots that as he says "doesn't have a middle". From my experience whenever he says "I have a new idea." this required me, the group's trained writer, to poke holes in the story that he wants to put together. I must admit it has been a challenge for me to keep up with him when he is inspired but I am sure he would be up for the challenge of coming up with the story for his entry.

For a guy who tends to get overexcited something a bit too much, this 24 hour challenge would be a challenge for him to focus and to think in panels. He can be a bit of a perfectionist so he might need to keep that on the minimum. Still, attention to detail will do him a lot of good.

He says that he wants to draw for more mature themes but knows that he has a long way to go before he can accomplish that. But at least this is a start.
